what agencies keep saying were true, then the business world would be
as backwards as the modeling industry is. Businesses would be completely
dependent upon temp agencies for their employees, and Human Resources
departments would not exist because no one but the temp agencies would
be qualified to screen and hire prospective employees. Could you imagine
any professional business being insulted by being told by the temp agencies
that they were not qualified to hire their own employees? In the modeling
world, such presumptions are openly accepted. In the business world, the
temp agency would find themselves out of business with this attitude after
they were laughed at and then rightfully fired.
Time and time again, it had been proven that when you apply business tactics
to the modeling world, which have been around since civilization began,
to the backwards modeling world, which have only existed on convenience
born from the limitations before the communications age and have been
around for less than one hundred years, that the business tactics beat
out the modeling industry ways every time. Every time. Anyone who keeps
on telling others that the agency way is the only way either have limited
business knowledge or their motives are entirely self serving, and cannot
be trusted. If you maintain an industry which embraces monopolies and
working-conflicts of interests, you maintain the environment of corruption,
mistrust, and the potential to mislead and scam people.
Why do you suppose that model and talent agencies are so tightly regulated
here in Florida? Is it because they are entirely trustworthy? What do
you think? Show me an industry that has to be regulated, and I will show
you an industry with some serious flaws. Sure, model and talent agencies
do have a place in the modeling world. That place is merely as one source
of jobs on an un exclusive basis; one of many sources of jobs. Model and
talent agencies have no business trying to manage the careers of the models
who employ them because of ethical conflicts and the fact that they also
represent the competition of the models who they are supposedly guiding
Agencies only have leverage in the careers of models if they are the only
game in town, and the secret is that they no longer are. Thousands of
models now book work on their own, and the agencies know it. Do you think
that the agencies want the models who they control to find this out?
So, you’re a model who wants to continue deluding themselves that
the agency way is the only way? You rationalize that the agencies are
booking you work and that you don’t want to risk pissing them off
if they find out that you are going around them to book jobs on your own?
If this is you, and you don’t have the courage to smash through
artificial limitations that others impose on your career, I suggest that
you continue. Models who sell themselves short make those of us who are
smart enough to take advantage of obvious possibilities look good. Frankly,
we will continue to out-book the models who are content to be led through
their careers, and that’s good for us.
So, who will you trust? Will you trust agencies, model consultants, model
managers, and sell-out photographers with self-serving agendas and who
are only seeking to make models dependent upon them? Will you trust those
who indoctrinate models with outdated, safe information which keeps the
lies of the old industry alive? Or, will you be smart enough to trust
model resource sites who are sincerely here to help models become empowered
in their careers? Will you trust model resource sites who will teach you
how to become independent of others and to be able to find and book work
on your own? The choice is yours.
Give someone a fish, and you feed them for a day. Teach someone to fish,
and you feed them for a lifetime. The truth is that a high school dropout
can do what many of these agencies can do, as long as they can read and
comprehend what we publish. It's up to you, now. Go to it.
