Tuesday, December 6, 2005 TFP? Not For Me! While some of us models and photographers have been guilty of doing TFP's (Time for prints, where aspiring photographers give models free pictures to build both of their portfolios- Also known as TFCD, or Time For CD) in the past, our opinion regarding "professionals" offering free services has changed- a lot- in the past year. The price of high quality digital cameras have fallen in the last two years, and it seems that just about anyone can go down to a circuit city, buy a camera, declare themselves to be a professional, and start throwing out free shoots with models. If you are an aspiring model who needs pictures and needs a portfolio, you MUST work with a professional photographer and invest in the pictures that you will need, if nothing more than to save valuable time and learn accurate information. If you are an experienced professional model with a solid portfolio, tear sheets, the tools that you need, and you know a bit about the industry to the point of being able to discern between good and bad pictures and good and bad information, then you may open yourself to professional collaborations, which is different than TFP. Professional collaborations are beneficial projects between professionals who are already making money in their career and know what in the hell they are doing. Would you trust a business who doesn't charge anything? If they don't make any money and are not making a living doing their "profession", how are they supposed to follow through on their promises? It's fine if a business does charity work on the side to polish their public image, but if all the business is is a charity, then it's not professional. There is something wrong with that, and professionals don't need hobbyists or people with unprofessional motives dragging down our careers. If it's too good to be true it normally is. Trust your gut, and invest in your career without taking shortcuts. You only get out of your career what you put into it. Tampa Bay Modeling will be doing more than helping professionals set appropriate rates in 2006. We are also going to be fighting this TFP cancer head-on, and will help to educate both models and photographers about why this charity work is fast becoming the junk food of careers.
