MODELING AGENCIES
As
of December 21, 2011, we have a new policy in place regarding Tampa Bay
modeling and talent agencies. Please read our official Tampa
modeling agency statement. We do not recommend any of them,
and models should only use them as one of many sources of modeling jobs
leads, and exercise extreme caution when they do.
Be very careful when dealing with any modeling and talent agency!
In our opinion, the only way that you can be safe, and that you can be
sure that an agency is ethical and professional, is to ONLY allow them
to do what they are supposed to: Find and book you into modeling jobs.
Period. Don’t limit your career that way, either, and go out and
find and book those same jobs on your own. If you book that job on your
own, you will not have to pay the agency commission, and neither will
the modeling job. Also, when the agencies realize that you are already
booking those modeling jobs on your own, they will HAVE TO work that much
harder to book you into the job, first, so that they are do not lose out
on their commission (Do you really think that ignorant, lazy models who
allow themselves to be dependent upon an agency will be getting those
jobs when you are out there booking them either way? You put those limited
models in their place, too, as you are more marketable, and competitive,
than they are!). The agency is put in their proper place (and so are agency
models), the independent model is in charge, as they should be, managing
their own career, and everyone wins (well, except for agency models and
unethical agencies)!
In our opinion, do not trust the middleman, and cut them out when you
can! Do not depend upon a business which, while working for you, also
works for your competition, which are other models whom they represent!
Also, do not fall for the lies and the false hope that agencies use to
manipulate others with. Businesses and modeling jobs, if an agency EVER
tries to tell you that agency-represented models are more professional
and more reliable than independent models, make them back it up! Have
them guarantee it in writing, and hold them to it! You might as well get
something tangible for the extra money that you have to pay out by obtaining
models through an agency. Do not allow an agency to tell you what to do,
as they, too, work FOR you, and do not allow them to LIMIT your options.
Many professional independent models are much better, and smarter, than
limited agency models, especially since independent models are go-getters
who work harder at their careers than models who choose to be dependent
upon agencies!
Models, in our opinion, never, ever allow an agency to manage your modeling
career, tell you what to do, or allow them to exclusively represent you.
Do not trust modeling agencies until they have earned your trust, as many
modeling scams are connected with modeling and talent agencies. Keep your
options open, and do not allow agencies to limit your marketability. The
modeling agency is supposed to work FOR the models, and not the other
way around. Also, in our opinion, it is a conflict of interest to allow
an agency to manage your modeling career, especially since they are also
working your competition, which are other models whom are represented
by the agency. Those models are competing with you for the same jobs!
Do you think that a business would be cool with someone who is working
for them working with their competition? We don’t think so! Think,
models, think! Could it be that, by allowing an agency to control you,
that you give them power which should be in your hands, and open yourself
up to manipulation, politics, and other unethical, unprofessional activity
that will limit your modeling career? Put the agencies in their place,
and MAKE them work for you. Don’t allow them to con you into thinking
that it is a buyers market when it is actually a sellers market. Models
have the power, as they are marketable, and they are the ones with the
leverage!
Also, allowing an agency the privilege of finding you modeling jobs is
the only way that they are supposed to make money, and in Florida, it’s
the law! Don’t spend a dime on an agency, or on anyone who they
refer you to for services, as you can never be too sure if the agencies
are not unethically making money from those referrals. Never, ever buy
anything from a modeling agency, or from anyone who they refer you to.
Also, never allow them to sell you on the idea that you need modeling
portfolios or composite cards, even if you do not have them. If you need
a modeling portfolio or composite cards, keep in mind that a modeling
agency is not in the business to give you those. Invest in your modeling
portfolio, composite cards, and in your modeling career tools BEFORE you
go to any modeling agency! You need to go to a professional photographer
who specializes in modeling and talent photography for those services,
and preferably one who is not referred to you by an agency, or one who
is not connected to any agency. If those photographers accept referrals
from agencies, which is different from referring their clients TO an agency,
use caution! Question the credibility and the integrity of any photographer
who is connected to a modeling agency or a modeling school.
What would WE do? We would skip any photographer who is connected to an
agency, and especially one who is connected to a modeling school, and
keep looking. Minimize your chances of being scammed by making sure that
the photographer does not have a potential conflict of interest by being
connected to an agency or a school!
If you have a portfolio and composite cards, regardless of where you got
them, the agency should be able to do their job, regardless, and get you
work. Never allow them to give you the lame excuse that your portfolio
and comps are not good enough, and make professional photographers the
scapegoat for why they are not good enough to do their job finding you
jobs, especially since such opinions often segue into trying to sell you
something! Consider their motivation when they tell you anything!
Please
note that we do not endorse one modeling agency over any other, and that
we are not affiliated with any modeling agency. Tampa Bay Modeling recommends
that models utilize modeling agencies ONLY as one of many sources of modeling
jobs, and that models should never allow any modeling agency to manage
their professional modeling career, as modeling agencies also represent
the competition of the model, which are other models. It is our opinion
that modeling agencies, and general, are working conflicts of interest
because of this. Our recommendation and our opinion may not necessarily
be about the modeling and talent agencies listed on our web site, as these
Tampa modeling agencies are legitimate and model-recommended.

Please
note that you do not have to be represented by a model and talent agency
to have a career as a professional model. Models can find modeling jobs
and book those jobs at go-see's without the use of an agency. While smart
models use model and talent agencies as another source of job leads, models
who take the initiative and utilize every means available to them have
a major advantage over models who are simply content to be simply represented
by model and talent agencies or a main mother agency.
Tampa
Bay Modeling cannot guarantee the results of models who choose to obtain
modeling jobs on their own. The results are up to the individual model
and the efforts that they put into their career.
We do not recommend allowing any model and talent agency to guide or manage
your career. In our opinion, it is a conflict on interest to allow this
because the agency also represents other models who are your competition.
Model and Talent agencies are simply a source of possible model jobs,
and should not be the center of any professional modeling career.

Agency) licenses verified by the Florida DBPR (Department of Business
and Professional Regulation) database on 08/18/06. Listed agencies are
